Good Friday

The gospel reading in a catholic church is conventionally read by the priest every Saturday evening at the Sunset Mass or at the Sunday Morning Mass. One weekend in a year repentant Catholics congregate to read the gospel with the Church’s priest; recounting the journey of Christ from the day he was captured by Caiphas up to his death on Friday at 3 p.m. The congregation would normally read out passages in the nuance of the condemning crowd at that time. For me to grow up in a strict catholic family is to be able to articulate prayers without tribulations. As I grew older I find it increasingly troubling to be like sheep and read out texts that makes me say; “crucify him!” or “Free Barabas”. Try as I may, I did not understand the shoes my family and I had to fill in every Good Friday and The Passion of The Christ allowed me to grasp the meaning behind the great man’s suffering. To me, he was put here on earth to die, for our sins. Or at least, for the sins of his soon to be believers.

And I am a believer. It is not hard to imagine, I spent most of my growing years reading about the wonder that is Jesus. The triumph his predecessors has shown from striking a rod on the rock for spring water to come, manna from heaven, Daniel alive in the lion’s den or Jonah who was made to survive in the great whale to warn the people at Nineveh – match not the scourging and humiliations He went through. He was in all his glory, human by strength through fear of sufferings, praying all along the way for a helping hand from above only to give in, understanding and accepting that he has to die, for people to have faith in his words.

The washing of his disciples’ feet had always confused me, until I saw the same act of humility coming from my mother. The year before she left, Christmas was to be in KL and despite her physical sufferings, came down to listen to my pathetic strum of carol songs. The morning after, I woke up to find mum on her knees scrubbing the windows of the apartment which didn’t need cleaning at all. I stopped her to take over and she said, “let me do this one”. I never did understand why she had to do it, but she did. This is the only image captured clearly in my head, now two years have gone since she left.

It is true that the catholic institution stays rigid on their stance against abortion, divorce and gay people but my faith in the religion my mother has taught me to know is nothing like that. She has taught me to understand the Man behind the faith, his love, his words and the memory of Him that is still alive today. For most church-goers, human failure urges them to gossip as soon as the Mass is over. Communities break away in bad faith and the holier-than-thou continue to scorn sinners as if they themselves don’t sin. They have forgotten that the very root of this religion is forgiveness and it is in the bible, no less, that God loves sinners, especially genuinely repentant sinners. The movie by Mel Gibson should have been titled, “The Compassion of Christ” to remind its people of this. For when Easter Sunday comes, every believer who walks out of His Church will not just sing the words but understand that, “the Mass has ended, let’s go in peace”.
